Sailing the East Coast
From Maine to Florida, sailing is a favorite water sport. Sailors enjoy skipping in and out of the craggy coastal fjords during the day and dining on lobsters in the evening in Maine.
Sailors in New Hampshire use Portsmouth as a base to visit all of the great Eastern Atlantic Coast cities. Massachusetts is a sailors' paradise for the inlets around Glouster and Boston Harbor to Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.
Block Island, Rhode Island is the center of eastern sailing. It is the place where all sailors congregate. Connecticut sailors love the off-shore islands and winds in the Long Island Sound. New York has Long Island, East River, and Hudson River for day sailors around Manhattan or sailors who want to take extended excursions. The Jersey Shore provides sailing challenges for sailors from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Delaware, although small¸ has a coastline that invites sailors.
Maryland and Virginia share the Chesapeake Bay where sailors can find some of the best sailing in the United States. After enjoying the quaint bayside villages, sailors in the Chesapeake Bay should plan on spending a day in Annapolis, Maryland. Sailors in that region also can venture up the various Virginia Rivers like the Potomac and James Rivers or explore the busy Hampton Roads.
After Virginia, North and South Carolina have barrier islands and resorts to explore along the Intercoastal Waterway. For sailors the Florida coasts on the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico offer many challenges and varieties of ports of call.
