Sailing in the USA

Whether sailing on a Sunfish or a world-class racing yacht, mariners agree that sailing is the best way to enjoy the water. Wherever there is water and wind, there are sailor enjoying the sun, sails, and wind. Surprisingly, sailors can chart a course to sail from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to any port on the Great Lakes by sailing along the Atlantic Coast to Manhattan, New York and the Hudson River to the Erie Canal and St. Lawrence Seaway System. Similarly, sailors can leave the Great Lakes in Chicago, Illinois and sail through the Chicago, Illinois, and Mississippi Rivers system to the Gulf of Mexico. Imagine circumnavigating the Eastern United States by sailboat!

These are not the only places to sail. Vermont and New York share Lake Champlain. The Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico have the Intercoastal Waterway, where sailors can find good winds and interesting ports in the coastal towns. Idaho, which is often thought of as a mountain state, has an excellent lake for sailing. Avid West Coast sailors can chart courses from Canada to Mexico along the Washington, Oregon, and California coasts or to Hawaii.

Additionally, wherever there are sailors, there are regattas according to the sailboat classes and types.

Some sailors want to sail year-round. Sailboats can be leased or chartered in the southern climes, like Florida and the Caribbean in the winter or along the Great Lakes or eastern states in the summer. If sailors prefer their own boats and do not have the time to move their boats from to follow the seasons, there are sailing crews who will sail the boats from place to place.
